The Apalachicola Bay area is located in Franklin County on Florida’s panhandle, west of Panama City. The area has over 200 historic homes and buildings, the majority with a Victorian Style. The unique broad streets are a result of the cities cotton production in the mid 1800’s. Shipping cotton was the areas largest industry and the wide streets were required in order to load and unload vast amounts of cotton. Today the area’s chief economic source comes from the water. Over 90% of Florida’s and 10% of the Nation’s oysters are harvested in Franklin County, not to mention the abundance of shrimp, blue crab and finfish. The Apalachicola River, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Estuary created by the two, cause the area to harbor a vast amount fish. For this reason the area is often a frequent haven for sport fishing. Located just minuets off the coast is St. George Island, a 28 mile unspoiled Barrier Island. The island is the area’s most popular location for tourists. Many bring their pets, since dogs are allowed on most of the islands beaches and rental properties. At the eastern end of the island is St. George Island State Park which includes a series of trails, boardwalks, and watch towers. The Apalachicola Bay area has a pleasant year round temperature with summer averages in the 80’s and winter averages in the 60’s.
