The Charlotte Harbor area is located in Charlotte County on Florida’s west coast, between Naples and Sarasota. The harbor is the second largest bay in Florida, after Tampa Bay. The area also contains two freshwater rivers, the Peace River and Myakka River. In combination with the estuary and the Gulf waters, the region supports a large amount of sport and leisure fishing. Punta Gorda is both the oldest of the Charlotte Harbor communities and the county seat. Situated at the mouth of the Peace River, Punta Gorda is inclusive with mansions and historic buildings dating back to the 1880’s. The downtown area has been recently renovated including various rotating sculptures and vibrant murals adorn the sides of the downtown buildings. The most contemporary of the harbor's cities is Port Charlotte. The town is a family centered community and home to the Charlotte County Sports Park, a typical venue for many annual events and festivals. Nine of the sixteen total golf courses in the c ounty are located in the city making it a popular pastime. Port Charlotte is also the home of the Charlotte Players and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Further south and located on Gasparilla Island, is the small but quaint town of Boca Grande. The island is renowned for the vast amount of tarpon that travel through the waters in the spring and summer months. Tourism and fishing are the major economic providers in the area, especially during tarpon season. The various unusual species that inhabit the area’s environment include dolphins, white pelicans, manatees, and osprey, adding to the islands unique luster. Within the past 10 years Charlotte Harbor has been ranked as the “Number One Best Place to live in the South” as well as “10 Greatest Places to Sail” according to Sail Magazine.
