The Florida Keys consist of about 1700 islands spanning out from the southernmost point of Florida and compose Monroe County. The keys all border America’s only living, coral barrier reef, loaded with tropical fish and marine life. As a result of the islands’ close proximity to water on all sides, each island has an abundance of water related activities. Key Largo is the northernmost key and is located about an hour south of the Florida mainland. The key is famous for its shallow reefs and deep ship wrecks. The Key Largo Dry Rocks is the site of the famous statue of “Christ of the Deep” and is one of the area’s most popular dive and snorkel sites. Tourism is the areas number one economic supporter and the majority of its businesses are locally and family owned and operated. Islamorada is a region composed of six islands, located just south of Key Largo. This area is best known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World and there are enough fishing captains to prove it. It is said to have the most fishing boats per square mile than any other destination in the world. The islands are also the home of Founders Park, a recreational facility complete with an amphitheater, skate park, baseball fields, pools and marina. At the midpoint of the keys’ chain is Marathon, “The Heart of the Florida Keys”. The area is the home of the keys’ only and recently renovated airport. The City Marina is situated on Boot Key Harbor, also the home to most of the areas marine activities. The island’s waters are frequently inhabited by boats and fisherman, especially during the months of May and June when thousands of huge tarpon travel through the channels. Key West is the southernmost key and probably the most well known. The city is well known for its famous inhabitants such as John Audubon, Ernest Hemingway, and Jimmy Buffet. It is also the home of the frequently visited site, "The Southern Most Point." Being that it is the southernmost point in Florida, Key West is only 90 miles from Cuba. Sunset in Mallory square is an every day nightly celebration. Visitors are entertained by many vendors and performers while watching the gorgeous sunsets that Key West has to offer.
