Fort Myers is located on the South West Coast of Florida, in Lee County, north of Naples. In the late 1800's The Royal Palm Hotel was built as a winter resort for wealthy visitors. During this time the bridge that connected Tamiami Trail to Fort Myers was completed and the city's population amplified. The area soon became a popular tourist destination and winter retreat for northerners. Both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford built winter homes for their family's and today their side by side estates are frequently toured by visitors. Thomas Edison had deep respect and love for nature. He developed a fondness for the beauty of the royal palm and had numerous trees imported and planted in the city. It is for this reason that the city is still referred to as the City of Palms. In recognition of Thomas Edison, each year the city hosts a two week long celebration for his birthday, February 11^th. Events include the parade of lights, a series of contests and activities, and the crowning of the King and Queen of Light at a coronation ball. One of city's the main economic providers is its annual tourist population. During Spring training Fort Myers is the home of the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox. The city has plenty to offer both visitors and residents. Fort Myers' climate is enjoyable all year round with an annual average temperature in the mid to upper 70's.
