Lake City is located in Columbia County in north central Florida, approximately midway between Jacksonville and Tallahassee. It is commonly known as the Gateway to Florida with its location about 40 miles south of the Florida/ Georgia border. Both I-75 and I-4 intersect in the city and mutually are typical highways traveled by tourists and travelers. The city is a small town but is steadily growing and within the past 25 years the population has doubled. The town’s proximity to many different rivers, lakes, and springs make it a popular destination for recreational water activities such as tubing, fishing, canoeing, and swimming. Florida’s only whitewater rafting is located in the Lake City area at the Big Shoals State Forest. Prior to the name Lake City, the town was known as Alligator, granted the inhabitants of the area’s lakes and rivers. The city has a pleasant average temperature at around 70 degrees. The area’s annual average rainfall is about 57 inches with the majority of that during the months of June through September.
