Miami is located on the South Eastern shoreline of Florida, in Miami- Dade County. The city is the second largest city in Florida, behind Jacksonville. The Miami- Metropolitan area is the largest metropolitan area in the South Eastern U.S, consisting of three large counties on the southern Atlantic Coast. As a result of its immediacy to the Caribbean Islands, Cuba, Central and South America, the area encompasses a large Spanish-speaking population. For this reason Miami is best known as a melting pot and is often referred to as the “The Gateway to the Americas.” One of the most influential ports in the U.S is the Port of Miami, frequently called the “Cruise Capital of the World” and “Cargo Gateway of the Americas”. Tourism is an extremely important industry in the Miami area and the port greatly contributes to the large tourist population. Visitors come from all over the world to relax and enjoy Miami’s beaches and entertainment. South Beach, which contains a strip of lush beaches and an exciting night life, is most likely Miami’s most popular attraction. Many people however are not aware that Miami Beach is not a part of the City of Miami. The city of Miami Beach is its own separate municipality with its own mayor and city council. The Miami area is the home to many professional sports teams including the Miami Dolphins, Florida Panthers, Miami Heat, and the Florida Marlins. The area’s climate is similar to that of a tropical one, with hot summers and dry winters. The annual average temperature is in the mid 80’s.
