St. Augustine is an absolutely beautiful city located on the northeast coast of Florida. With its warm climate, and its rich history it is a perfect place to live. It is the nation’s oldest European settlement to be consistently populated. It was founded on September 8th, 1565 by a Spanish admiral who named it after Augustine; a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Since then St. Augustine has been under many different rules. It was first under Spain. It served them two purposes, a military base and a settlement for Catholic missionaries. In 1763 the Treaty of Paris gave Florida to the British who had previously been involved in many wars against St. Augustine, but soon after that, in 1783, a second Treaty of Paris gave Florida back to Spain. About 35 years later the U.S took over all the Spanish Colonies of East and West Florida. Finally in 1845 Florida was proclaimed a state. Even after all the wars that took place in St. Augustine thirty-six of the original buildings remain, and many others were reconstructed. Around 1880 a man named Henry Flagler became a prominent influence on St. Augustine’s history. He created three major hotels - turning it into a tourist resort. These hotels are still used today, one is a part of Flagler College, one is a museum, and one is still used as a hotel. Restidents and visitors will truly enjoy the historical flavor of St. Augustine.
