St. Petersburg is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, approximately 30 miles west of Tampa. The city is nicknamed the “Sunshine City” since it is claimed to have some 360 days of sunshine each year. It comes as no surprise that the area is a popular destination for tourists. St. Petersburg is also the home to the 2005 rated #1 U.S. Beach, Fort Desoto Park. The city includes a variety of entertainment, attractions, and galleries. The Salvador Dali Museum is located downtown and contains the largest collection of his work in the world. Great Explorations (a children’s museum), the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Holocaust Museum are also well worth the visit. The St. Petersburg Pier is frequently visited by tourists and residents since it hosts weekly festivals, has fishing access, boat rentals, shopping, dining and an aquarium. The professional baseball team, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play in St. Pete’s Tropicana Field. The IndyCar Series race, the Honda Grand Prix is also held in St. Petersburg during the beginning of April. Both visitors and residents enjoy the city’s downtown shopping complex, BayWalk. The complex contains an IMAX Muvico Movie Theater as well as a variety of retail shops. When the sun sets the complex turns into a popular nightlife destination. The downtown St. Pete area is not only exciting at night. Every Saturday morning, spanning the months of October through May, the streets are donned with a farmers market. Locals sell produce, fresh fruits, and various types of foods such as barbecue, while artists and musicians entertain shoppers. The St. Petersburg area is rich with cultural influences that include Greek, Scottish, and Spanish. Both residents and visitors will find the city entertaining and relaxing with its variety of attractions and relaxing beaches. The climate is typically mild during the winters and warm with daily afternoon showers in the summers.
