Stuart is located in St. Lucie County on Florida’s central east coast. The city is known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World” due its prevalence and huge diversity of game fish. The sailfish is a popular catch year round in local waters in December through March and the summer months, June and July. The city’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River Lagoon, St. Lucie River, Lake Okeechobee, and inshore canals provide the area with a multitude of fishing localities. Boating is another popular pastime in the area as well as a large contributor to the local economy. More than 10,000 visitors attend the annual boat show each January, hosted at a marina on the St. Lucie River. The are a spanning from Stuart down to West Palm Beach is known as Florida’s Treasure Coast, the name attributed to the many Spanish ships that wrecked off the coast during the 17th and 18th centuries. The majority of the wrecked ships were collectively known as the Spanish Treasure Fleet, carrying various goods and metals such as silver, gold, gems, spices, silk and other exotic commodities. Stuart’s recently renovated historic downtown now offers a waterfront park, boardwalk, and a seemingly unlimited amount of unique boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. The city’s mild tropical weather is pleasant year round with an average summer temperature at 85 degrees and an average winter temperature at 65 degrees.
